PITTSBURGH--April 19 and 20, STAYCEE PEARL dance project (SPdp) & Soy Sos will unveil a new project as part of worx, a mixed repertory concert at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater.

Titled sol., The work draws from the soul music of the late 50s to mid 70s to create an expressive sound and movement experience steeped in the emotional, funky, rhythmical qualities of the genre.

“We’re interested in exploring the visceral reactions the music evokes and what it means for different people,” said Staycee Pearl, Co Executive and Artistic Director of SPdp. “When I hear Soul, I think about listening to it with my parents and how it’s just intertwined in so many aspects of my childhood memories.

Incorporating the upbeat, athletic movements and flavor of Soul with a contemporary vocabulary, SPdp dancers groove and vibe to a rich assortment of music curated and expertly mixed by Sound Designer Herman “Soy Sos” Pearl.

Using modern tools and techniques, such as filters, looping, spatializing the sound, and smearing time, Soy Sos brings different moods and effects out of each song. To create sol.’s playlist, He is going deep to find material and inspiration.

For starters, he met with J.Malls, one of the founders and DJ of TITLE TOWN, Pittsburgh’s all-vinyl soul and funk dance party, to mine his extensive knowledge and record collection in search of lesser known classic Soul records--some of which have Pittsburgh roots.

“We want to capture more of the feel and the sound of that era without limiting ourselves songs that everybody already knows,” Soy Sos said.

sol. will continue to develop into a full length piece beyond April’s concert and marks the beginning of a new phase of movement and sound collaboration between Staycee and Soy Sos.

“We’re thinking deeply about the impetus of movement. How do we effectively create a vibration and environment?” said Staycee. “We’ve had several different methods of working together before and this time we’re looking to deepen the process to make sound and movement more integrated to give our artists and audiences a richer experience”

In a nod to their past work, the concert will also feature some of the Pearl’s formative pieces rooted in shared and personal history, identity, culture, and the now. circlePOP, for example, considers the impact of pop culture on individuals and communities.

Another featured work, ...on being… was inspired by the socio-political climate surrounding race and colorism to examine Blackness in relation to Post-Blackness.

STAYCEE PEARL dance project (SPdp) exists to interpret and mirror culture and community through dance and dance centered multi-media experiences. With diverse casting and programming, SPdp explores innovative conceptual possibilities while participating in meaningful collaboration.

Soy Sos is the head engineer and owner of Tuff Sound Recording, as well as the sound designer and co-founder of PearlArts Studios. Through STAYCEE PEARL dance project, Herman creates soundscapes to serve as a component to contemporary dance.
